Sept. 12, 2006 Notice: SC4 corrects issue with electronic records St. Clair County Community College identified a vulnerability in the college’s computer network regarding storage of employee and student information. With assistance from information-technology partner SunGard Higher Education, the college immediately corrected it. SC4 has no reason to believe at this time that the integrity of the information has been violated or breached. The information could include a person’s full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, student ID number and telephone number. The records include those for anyone (students, employees, board members, etc.) whose information was in the college’s Datatel database. However, some records did not include all of that information. The vulnerability, which was related to a separate scheduling software called SARS and limited to computers on campus, existed for two years but was corrected immediately when SunGard was notified. The college is not aware at this time of any instances where the information was compromised or used inappropriately. As always, it is suggested you carefully review all credit cards and banking/financial institution(s) statements for any suspicious and/or unauthorized activity. For information about identity theft, you may want to review this Web site: www.consumer.gov/idtheft. Additional information, specifically about possible misuse of one’s Social Security Number is available at this Social Security Administration Web site: www.ssa.gov/pubs/10064.html. Should you have any questions, contact Shawn Starkey, executive director of public relations, marketing and legislative affairs, at (810) 989-5767 or sstarkey@sc4.edu. |
