SC4 to host husband, wife discussing peace mission in Palestine A former Port Huron couple will speak about their recent Michigan Peace Team mission to Palestine on Sunday, May 16, at St. Clair County Community College. SC4’s International Cultural Education Committee is sponsoring the presentation at 4 p.m. in Room 150 of the Citizens First Michigan Technical Education Center on the college’s Port Huron campus. Tom and Mary Mechtenberg, who now live in Niles, will speak about and show photos of their observations and experiences during their one-month trip in fall 2009. During their mission, they were based in the West Bank village of Huwarrah. The Mechtenbergs are former Peace Corps volunteers who spent 2002 to 2004 in St. Lucia, an island country in the eastern Caribbean. Following the December 2004 tsunami, they served a short-term Peace Corps stint for three months in Sri Lanka, an island country in the Indian Ocean off the southeast tip of India. Mr. Mechtenberg retired in 1995 as a social worker in the special education department of the Port Huron Area School District. Mrs. Mechtenberg served for 14 years, until 1994, on the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners and then served one term on the Port Huron City Council in the late 1990s. The couple moved from Port Huron to Niles, Mrs. Mechtenberg’s hometown, in 2000. ###
