SC4 students win recognition for writing, art

Several St. Clair County Community College students have received recognition for their work in the 52nd edition of Patterns, a literary and arts publication featuring student work.

SC4’s Patterns is the longest continually published community college literary and arts magazine in the state. The writing, art and photography work of 42 selected students is featured this year.

Awards were given to students during a Patterns Reception on Sunday, April 25, on the college’s Port Huron campus.

The following students received awards:

  • First-place poem — Todd Runge of Port Huron for Surrealistic Breakfast.

  • Second-place poem — Tara Britz of Port Huron for The Dandelion.

  • Eleanor Mathews Award, poetry — Todd Runge of Port Huron for Still Life.

  • Blanche Redman Award, poetry — Don Lierman of Imlay City for Pop Goes.

  • First-place essay — Kirsten Kramer of Fort Gratiot for Squared.

  • Second-place essay — Charles Johnson of Fort Gratiot for Wake Up Time.

  • Kathy Nickerson Award, essay — Andrew Gorzen of St. Clair for Scenes from a Horror Movie.

  • First-place story — Michael Smith of Marine City for Hard Lesson.

  • Second-place story — Amanda McRae of Sarnia for Confessions of a Coat Closet.

  • Richard J. Colwell Award, story — Todd Runge of Port Huron for Night About the Town.

  • First-place art — Edward Kindsvater of St. Clair for Become, Reach and Broken Curiosity.

  • Second-place art — Dave Worden of Jeddo for Skeleton.

  • Third-place art — Emily Krutsch of Marine City for C-Thru and Polarized.

Thirty-five students also received honorable mention or selection of merit awards for having their work chosen for inclusion in Patterns.

Visiting judges were Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin.

Fennelly is an associate professor of English at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She has published four books of poetry and nonfiction, including Unmentionables. She’s also had poems published in more than 40 anthologies.

Franklin is a writer-in-residence at the University of Mississippi. An author of three books, his next novel, Crooked Letter Crooked Letter, is due out in September. His stories and novel excerpts have appeared in more than 40 publications.
