SC4 student newspaper wins 15 awards

The Erie Square Gazette, St. Clair County Community College’s student newspaper, captured 15 awards in the Michigan Community College Press Association’s annual contest.

The awards are:
  • Editor-in-Chief Brian Johnston, a sophomore from Worth Township, first place for personality profile, first place and honorable mention for headline writing, second place for critical review, third place for feature story and honorable mention for in-depth news story. Johnston also came in second place for Student Journalist of the Year.
  • Photo Editor Twana Pinskey, a sophomore from Port Huron, second place for feature photo, third place for photo essay and third place for headline writing.
  • Sports Editor Don Lierman, a sophomore from Imlay City, first place for sports coverage.
  • Staff Writer Savannah Wilcox, a freshman from Melvin, second place for sports coverage.
  • Staff Writer Kayla Dimick, a sophomore from Marysville, second place for personality profile.
  • Copy Editor Aaron Tomlinson, a sophomore from Fort Gratiot, third place for sports coverage.
  • Erie Square Gazette staff, third place for overall design.

The Erie Square Gazette’s advisor is Professor John Lusk.

The awards were presented Saturday, April 17, at the association’s annual Press Day Conference at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn. The conference and contest are open to Michigan community colleges that produce a newspaper biweekly or less frequently. Several professionals in the newspaper business served as judges for the contest.
