SC4 student named semi-finalist in Motivate Michigan contest

St. Clair County Community College student Joe Landschoot of Port Huron Township has been selected as a top-10 semi-finalist in the Motivate Michigan statewide contest.

As a top-10 semi-finalist, Landschoot will share in up to $100,000 in scholarship money. The contest was open to any high school senior or person enrolled in a Michigan college or university.

Students were asked to submit a problem statement regarding Michigan’s economy, a proposed idea and an expected outcome. Landschoot’s ideas were to lower business taxes, give tax credits to Michigan residents who buy Michigan-made products and establish a Web site that lists all Michigan-made products for consumers.

Landschoot submitted the idea as part of an assignment in SC4 Professor John Lusk’s English 101 class. Landschoot chose the tax issue and Michigan’s economy and sent his ideas to the Motivate Michigan contest.

As a semi-finalist, Landschoot had to create a video about his idea. The video will be posted online, and the public will vote the list down to five finalists. The finalists then will present to judges in May.

Voting runs Monday, April 12, through Friday, April 30. To vote, and for more details, visit www.motivatemichigan.org.

The contest is sponsored by Comerica, Meijer, Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the President's Council, State Universities of Michigan. The idea was developed by Ciber, an information technology company in Southfield.
